Pushing Daisies

Pushing Daisies is the story of a pie maker who has a unique ability from birth of being able to bring the dead to life. He can only do this for 1 minute, any longer and something of equal size, within a short area of him must die and take its place. The example of this given in the show is at the start when his mother dies and the pie maker brings her back to life only to have the neighbours Dad take her place in death. However after bring someone back to life, in this case his mother, he can have no physical contact with them in any way or else they return to being dead. Using his ability to talk to the dead for a minute with no consequences, with the help of a friend a private detective they go about asking murder victims who killed them in order to claim a cash reward for doing so.

The story line tells of how the pie maker brings his childhood sweetheart back from the dead at the beginning to find out who murdered her. However he is unable to touch her again and send her back to the grave as he realises how much he loves her.
He decides to let her live and break his sacred rule of going over the minute but as a consequence the pie maker he can no longer touch her or her him, as she will return to death immediately if they do. The two fall madly in love but can never touch. Each week there is a different murder that the pie maker, his girlfriend and the private detective solve by bring the dead back to life for a brief moment and asking them who killed them or what clues they remember.

The show is so French in many ways. First off the set itself looks like a Parisian world, with roof tops and French balconies. The quirky aspects of each character and the slightly dark subtext in a jovial way remind us of a Jean-Pierre Jeunet (director of “Amelie” and “Delicatessen”) films. Even certain scenes have been heavily influenced by Michel Gondry (director of “Science of Sleep” and “Eternal Sunshine Spotless Mind”) with the use of stop motion and clay animation.

Firstly what I like about the show is the fact it is one of the most atheistic show I’ve ever seen. Films always have religious aspect to it even if it is devoid of religion, as this makes a statement about religion in itself. Pushing Daisies, brushes over the matter of religion so casually that this show would and could never be made at any other time period other than now. The Spanish inquisisan would have tortured its makers good, not out of its anti religious sentiments but out of its total casual portrayal of a world with no God. Even when characters are brought back from the dead, it is more like taking someone out of a coma, with no memories of heaven, hell, just the moments before their death.

The negative things about the show are numerous. The jokes are poor and some of the characters such as the pie maker are too boring and nice to have a main role, in my opinion. The story line relies on the “will they won’t they” aspect I’ve touched on in my other blogs, in order to draw the audience in. The show however fails on many levels as with each episode you question half way through why you are watching it. The repetitive story lines of solving cases each week that seems identical to previous ones gets annoying.
The reason it gets a better mark despite all of my criticism is that it’s an American knock off of a French film, a poor one to be fair but unique enough and quirky enough that it fit into the category of a show you could watch with your girlfriend happily. It gets a 3 out of 5.

The US Office

The US Office

While it always comes under criticism for not being as good as the original, it is not without its merits. It’s different enough to the original, besides the fact it mirrors the characters. The story lines are far more farfetched, the humour is different, having only a quarter of the awkward moments of its UK counterpart. It is easier to watch due to its, “further from reality story lines” in each episode. Unlike in the UK version there are never moments when you are dying to turn off the TV and hide from the shame you feel for the characters. The American version is more slapstick; it attempts three times the amount of jokes in each episode with only a quarter of them working. The show is still running currently and like all shows in their later seasons, they begin to concentrate on more story based episodes that carry on throughout the whole season. The result is, idiots like me keep watching the fifth, sixth and seventh seasons just to see what happens to the characters I’ve come to know. Soon I realise I haven’t laughed once over the whole last three seasons, I’ve wasted roughly 40 hours of my precious life watching this crap!
While the later seasons are rubbish the seasons 1 to 4 are good (4 out of 5). Unfortunately due to the later seasons, the rating MUST go down. End it, End it now!
The US Office gets 3 out of 5.

It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia

Here in Europe the show has had more of a pot head following due, to the antics and behaviour of the immature characters in the show. However this is not to say the show does not deserve recognition for being excellent. The character of “Charlie” in particular carries the show, he’s bizarre behaviour, round about ways of doing the most simple of tasks and his unique way of looking at a situation, all allow opportunities for extremely comic moments. Each character in the show is completely unique and has a completely different personality. As with Law & Order the show does not require chronological viewing. It really doesn’t matter which episode of which series you watch. The show is very easy to watch and like “Arrested Development” you’ll find yourself never just satisfied with just watching one episode.
The show however is not without its criticisms, for example Danny Devito’s character, while entertaining; he tends to steal the show in the episodes he plays a key role in. Arguably the best episodes are when he plays a lesser, to none existent role. The lack of character development some would argue is a flaw; however the idea of the show is that they never develop or change as they’re a group of going nowhere drunks. Often shows change and begin to bring in minor characters, change main characters and concentrate on story lines over an entire series as opposed to an episode. They normal start this in their third or fourth series which normally marks the slow downfall of the show, as it’s now changed from being a self contained show in half an hour to a story line over a whole series. The American Office, House, 30 Rock and Scrubs are examples of this. They do this in an attempt to get audiences attached to character and interested in their development as it give the show a better chance of getting another season out of it. It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia stays strong and refuses to go down this road and must be admired for that. The only problem is some episodes are similar to others and the last session was defiantly poorer than previous ones. This being said, the last episode of the last series was one of the best episodes of the show I’ve seen.
In conclusion, the show is tightly scripted, possesses great characters and makes you laugh so hard you’ll piss yourself like a geriatric. Although not all seasons are, I’m giving it 5 out of 5.

Law & Order SVU

Law & Order SVU
There have been countless amounts of law & orders; Los Angeles, Criminal Intent, Trial by Jury and a UK version. So what makes “Special Victims Unit” better than all the other law and orders you ask? There are numerous things that make the show stand out as not only the best Law & Order, but one of the best detective shows currently still being made. First of all the cast is excellent, characters like detective Stabler and detective Benson are perfectly cast. Their relationship has none of the “Mulder and Skully” will they, won’t they, kiss aspects to them. A purely platonic relationship between two attractive people can work it seems in the TV world; however it is still very rare. Ice T appears in every episode however only about one in eight does he get a meaningful role, which works considering his limitations as an actor.

The fact that the subject matter is darker than other detective shows (they deal with sex crimes in the show) means, there is little room for comic relief, which I believe, has no place in a detective show anyway. While there is very little character development and to be fair each series, whether it is series one or six are extremely similar, this doesn’t matter as each episode ties into itself neatly by its end. By creating the show this way, it can be viewed at anytime during the series, as there are no recurring themes. The show has very little “To be continued…” which in my opinion detective shows should never have, as it is too difficult to sustain an audience’s attention for the space of two hours.
In summary, SVU is dark, rough, leaving you feeling a little sick after certain episodes and a having a lesser opinion of humanity on a whole. Isn’t that what we all want from our detective shows in the end?
Law & Order gets a 4 out of 5

Boardwalk Empire

Finished watching, Boardwalk Empire last night. While it is very entertaining, I wonder in the back of my mind, was it simply out of the fact that its subject matter, (prohibition) is such a fascinating period in American history. Steve Buscemi character is far too unrealistic, on the one hand he’s this generous, courteous gentleman and on the other a man who will kill freely, all and any that get in his way, leaving a skitsofrenic feel to his character. His girlfriend is another character who share skitsofenia, on the one hand, being arguable the most honourable, righteous character in the show and the next minute she’s found extorting a clothes shop owner.
Its cast helps immensely, with the character of Al Capone, who does as good a job of playing the role as Robert Di Niro in “The Untouchables”. Worth Watching but leaves you wanting.......4 out of 5
