It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia

Here in Europe the show has had more of a pot head following due, to the antics and behaviour of the immature characters in the show. However this is not to say the show does not deserve recognition for being excellent. The character of “Charlie” in particular carries the show, he’s bizarre behaviour, round about ways of doing the most simple of tasks and his unique way of looking at a situation, all allow opportunities for extremely comic moments. Each character in the show is completely unique and has a completely different personality. As with Law & Order the show does not require chronological viewing. It really doesn’t matter which episode of which series you watch. The show is very easy to watch and like “Arrested Development” you’ll find yourself never just satisfied with just watching one episode.
The show however is not without its criticisms, for example Danny Devito’s character, while entertaining; he tends to steal the show in the episodes he plays a key role in. Arguably the best episodes are when he plays a lesser, to none existent role. The lack of character development some would argue is a flaw; however the idea of the show is that they never develop or change as they’re a group of going nowhere drunks. Often shows change and begin to bring in minor characters, change main characters and concentrate on story lines over an entire series as opposed to an episode. They normal start this in their third or fourth series which normally marks the slow downfall of the show, as it’s now changed from being a self contained show in half an hour to a story line over a whole series. The American Office, House, 30 Rock and Scrubs are examples of this. They do this in an attempt to get audiences attached to character and interested in their development as it give the show a better chance of getting another season out of it. It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia stays strong and refuses to go down this road and must be admired for that. The only problem is some episodes are similar to others and the last session was defiantly poorer than previous ones. This being said, the last episode of the last series was one of the best episodes of the show I’ve seen.
In conclusion, the show is tightly scripted, possesses great characters and makes you laugh so hard you’ll piss yourself like a geriatric. Although not all seasons are, I’m giving it 5 out of 5.
